OpenDNS

22Jul06

I have just stumbled up on one of the greatest things I have seen for a while on the internet. I first heard of OpenDNS on Whalesalad.com and having read Michael’s incredibly optimistic review I didn’t hesitated to change my DNS settings and was surprised by just how much of a difference using the OpenDNS service made.

OpenDNS boast a monster cache on their servers which means they are able to resolve domains you type in your address bar to server addresses much faster. Not only that but OpenDNS is incredibly smart, as it is able to correct common typos and send you on your way. I just typed ‘google’ in my browser and it took me straight to www.google.co.uk almost instantaneously.

Althought the service is only running on servers the other side of the pond, it seems much faster than my ISP’s DNS servers which are just a short hop south in London.

I seriously recommend giving it a try!

Update: I have just come across an article at Wired which goes into OpenDNS in more depth. Take a look.

  1. Thanks for the kind words!

BTW, We already have our gear in London racked up and ready. We’re probably a week away from being fully online there which should make things even better.

    Thanks,
    David

  2. Thanks David, I look forward to you switching London on, as if its this quick now, I can’t wait to see how it performs then!
