Innovation Station is powered by WordPress. WordPress is an open source state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform, much more than a ‘blogging tool’, WordPress has a strong focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. It’s powerfull system of themes and templates allows a high level of customisation, whilst making the process as simple as possible.
Plug-in-power
The beauty of WordPress is the wide range of community produced plugins that are available that allow you to do so much more, and here are the ones I use to do what I do.
- Akismet - The spam killer. It comes pre-installed on WordPress and is easily activated by getting a key from wordpress.com, a must have.
- CJD Notpad - I love this little tool from Chris J.Davis, one of the creators of K2. It allows you to capture notes directly in WordPress and keep them in their own little place, instead of using drafts or private posts. It also comes with a handy little bookmarklet so you can take notes directly from any webpage straight to your WordPress. Perfect for the way I work!
- Extended Live Archives - Enhanced byArnaud Froment, and based the original Super Archives by Jonas Rabbe. the ELA affords a much more efficient way of browsing the archives, and as they are ‘live’ the page does not reload every time you move down a level.
- FAlbum - I could just drop a link in to my flickr page, but I like to have my photos appear right on my site. Makes it simpler for the few who have yet to hear of flickr.
- Filosofo Old Style Upload - Just as it says, this brings back the old style seperate upload page in the main menu of the backend. I find it extremely useful.
- Gravatar - You all know it, you all love it. It means I get to grace not only my own blog, but all those Gravatar enabled blogs out there with my face. You lucky buggers!
- K2 Rolling Asides - Again inspired by the father of the Kubrick theme and K2, and developed as a plugin by Safirul Alredha and modified by Steve Lam. Simple, beautiful, thats all I have to say.
- Michaels Rolling Archives - Would you believe, Michael Heilemann again! As first seen on Binary Bonsai and developed as a plugin for K2 by Safirul Alredha. Like rolling asides, but for past posts. You know it makes sense.
- Subscribe to Comments - Does exactly what it says on the tin, allows you to keep up to date with a post you have commented on. Lets you know what everyone else has to say.
- Search Everything - Oh and it really does search everything. If you have a lot of content in ‘pages’ then this is a must.
- Tiger Style Admin - Until Shuttle Atlantis touches down, this fantastic theme for the WordPress back end is sweet as a nut. Don’t get me wrong, WordPress is sweet as it is, but this is easier to when I’m working on my small laptop screen.
- Ultimate Tag Warrior - Not sure if this craze for ‘tags’ will catch on. I always thought that’s what a renegade graffiti artist did to mark his work…you know em and love em, tags are here to say. Every little helps
- WordPress Database Backup - Steve Jobs says that only 5% (or something close to that) regularly back up our computers. Well I am in that few percent, and I am just as careful with my blog. It comes bundled with WordPress, so use it. You might regret it if you dont!
- WP Contact Form - You don’t even need to open you email. How thoughtful am I? This plugin makes adding a contact form easy to the extent of being almost silly.
I also use Lightbox JS 2.0 to display images on pages and posts created by Lokesh Dhakar. If is also available as a plugin by Safirul Alredha
